Seminar: Working with Temporary and Relational Art in Public Spaces

Velkommen til et to-dagers seminar om midlertidig og relasjonell kunst i offentlige rom.

Tema

Hvordan kan deltakerbaserte, midlertidige og stedsspesifikke kunstprosjekter skape fellesskap – og åpne for nye måter å oppleve og bruke byen på? Hvilke typer samarbeid, kunstneriske metoder og arbeidsprosesser trengs for å gi rom for eksperimentering og reell deltakelse? Og hvordan kan forvaltning og kuratorisk praksis legge til rette for prosjekter som ikke etterlater seg fysiske spor, men som likevel skaper varige erfaringer og påvirkning?

Gjennom presentasjoner og samtaler undersøker seminaret hvordan temporære, immaterielle og relasjonelle kunstprosjekter kan skape varige spor – sosialt, sanselig og strukturelt – og hvordan slike praksiser faktisk utvikles innenfor offentlige rammer. Samtidig tar seminaret utgangspunkt i de konkrete utfordringene i feltet: hvordan slike praksiser forhandles og gjennomføres innenfor eksisterende institusjonelle, økonomiske og byråkratiske rammer.

Bidragsytere

Seminarets spørsmål utforskes gjennom bidrag fra kunstnere, kommuner og statlige aktører, som deler erfaringer fra konkrete prosjekter i Norge og internasjonalt.

Vi gleder oss over å ønske flere spennende bidragsytere velkommen, blant annet KORO – Kunst i offentlige rom, Mathias Danbolt (professor i kunsthistorie ved Universitetet i København) og Sans façon (kunstnerduo, CA/UK/FR), med flere som annonseres snart.

Seminaret henvender seg til kunstnere, kuratorer, kunstkonsulenter og kulturarbeidere i offentlig sektor, samt andre aktører innen fagfeltet offentlig kunst, og løfter frem sentrale spørsmål om samarbeid, prosesser og rammer for temporær kunst i offentlig rom.

Seminaret er en del av kunstprogrammet Der vi møtes – kunst i uterom i anledning 900-års jubileet Stavanger 2025. Seminaret presenteres på Tou i samarbeid med Stavanger kommune og er kuratert av Koffi & Højgaard.

Welcome to a two-day seminar on temporary and relational art in public space. 

How can participatory, temporary and site-specific art projects form new communities - and open up new ways of experiencing and inhabiting the city? What kinds of collaborations, artistic methods and working processes are needed to allow for experimentation and meaningful participation? And how can public administration and curatorial practice support projects that leave no permanent physical trace, yet still produce lasting experiences and impact?

Through presentations and discussions, the seminar explores how temporary, immaterial and relational art practices can create lasting traces – socially, sensorially and structurally – and how such practices can be developed within public frameworks. At the same time, the seminar addresses the concrete challenges of the field: how these practices are negotiated and realised within existing institutional, economic and bureaucratic conditions.

These questions will be explored through contributions by artists, curators, municipalities and public agencies, sharing experiences from specific projects in Norway and internationally.  

We’re excited to welcome contributors including KORO – Public Art Norway, Mathias Danbolt (Professor of Art History at the University of Copenhagen), and Sans façon (artist duo, CA/UK/FR), with more to be announced soon  

The seminar is aimed at artists, curators, public art consultants and cultural workers in the public sector, as well as others working within the field of public art, and addresses key questions related to collaboration, processes and frameworks for temporary art in public space.

The seminar is part of the art programme The Places We Meet – Art in Public Spaces in Stavanger Municipality, presented in connection with Stavanger’s 900-year anniversary. It takes place at Tou in collaboration with Stavanger kommune and is curated by Koffi & Højgaard.
