Mennesketunneler

Som en del av kunstprogrammet Der vi møtes – kunst i uterom, skal Stavanger kommune gjennomføre et permanent kunstprosjekt på kulverten over Eiganestunnelen. Kunstner Marit Benthe Norheim fikk tildelt oppdraget etter åpen prekvalifisering med påfølgende skissekonkurranse.  

Kunstneren har utviklet kunstprosjektet Mennesketunneler, tre store skulpturer som inviterer til undring, lek og opphold. Skulpturene skal produseres i løpet av 2026 og vil etter planen monteres på kulverten våren 2027.

Om kunstneren

Marit Benthe Norheim er en billedkunstner som er basert i Hjørring, Danmark. Hun er opptatt av kunst som er en del av en større sammenheng, og som har en vilje til å kommunisere med folk og omgivelser. Det er et mål for Norheim at kunsten hennes kan oppleves på mange plan, ikke bare gjennom intellekt og tanke, men også fysisk og sanselig.

Om kunstprosjektet

Utgangspunktet for ideen til skulpturene Mennesketunneler, var horisonten mot himmelen, som er det første man ser når man går mot Kulverten fra Vålandsskogen. Tre store skulpturer plasseres på Kulvertens høyeste punkt og danner på denne måten en ny «skyline». Skulpturene er av betong med jernoksid, noe som skaper en visuell forbindelse til trafostasjonen i nærheten.

Skulpturene er sammensatt av ulike bilder av mennesker, noen risset inn, andre mer tredimensjonale. Sammen skaper de assosiasjoner til mer og mindre kjente myter. Skulpturene har tunneler som går parallelt med tunnelen under Kulverten, som besøkende kan gå eller kravle gjennom. Langsiden av skulpturene har innebygde benker slik at publikum kan sette seg ned og nyte utsikten til Mosvannet på den ene siden, og Vålandsskogen på den andre. 

Marit Benthe Norheim har en gjennomgående poetisk tilnærming til prosjektet, som står i produktiv kontrast til skulpturenes monumentalitet. Forslaget fremstår som både personlig og allmennmenneskelig, og åpner for identifikasjon også utover den konkrete fortellingen som ligger til grunn. Verkets organiske formspråk og nyanserte fargebruk gir et visuelt uttrykk som skiller seg fra det man ofte ser i denne skalaen, og tilfører stedet en mykere, mer kroppsnær dimensjon.

As part of the art programme The Places We Meet – Art in Public Spaces, Stavanger Municipality will carry out a permanent art project on the culvert above the Eiganes Tunnel. Artist Marit Benthe Norheim was awarded the commission following an open call for artists, and subsequent sketch competition. 

The artist has developed the project Mennesketunneler (Human Tunnels), three large sculptures that invite contemplation, play, and spending time. The sculptures will be produced during 2026 and are planned to be installed on the culvert in spring 2027.

About the artist

Marit Benthe Norheim is a visual artist based in Hjørring, Denmark. She is interested in art that forms part of a larger context, and that seeks to communicate with people and its surroundings. Norheim aims for her art to be experienced on several levels—not only intellectually, but also physically and sensorially.

About the art project

The starting point for the idea behind the sculptures Mennesketunneler was the horizon, which is the first thing you see when approaching the culvert from Våland Forest. Three large sculptures are placed at the highest point of the culvert, creating a new “skyline.” The sculptures are made of concrete with iron oxide, creating a visual connection to the nearby transformer station.

The sculptures are composed of different images of human figures—some incised into the surface, others more three-dimensional. Together, they evoke associations with both familiar and lesser-known myths. The sculptures contain tunnels that run parallel to the culvert below, which visitors can walk or crawl through. Along the sides of the sculptures, built-in benches allow visitors to sit and enjoy the view of Mosvatnet on one side and Våland Forest on the other.

Marit Benthe Norheim has a consistently poetic approach to the project, which stands in a productive contrast to the monumental scale of the sculptures. The proposal appears both personal and universal, inviting identification beyond the specific narrative on which it is based. The work’s organic forms and nuanced use of colour create a visual expression that differs from what is often seen at this scale, adding a softer, more body-centered dimension to the site.
